How to charge an electric car without a driveway

About a third of UK homes have no off-street parking, and the honest answer is a menu, not a single fix.

What are your options if you have no driveway?

Roughly a third of UK households park on the street, and for them the home-charging advantage, the 2.3p per mile off-peak rate that makes EVs so cheap to run, does not come automatically. But the menu of legal options is better in 2026 than it has ever been:

  1. A cross-pavement cable channel outside your home, with a wallbox on your wall.
  2. A kerbside or lamppost charger on your street, run by a public network.
  3. Workplace charging, if your employer offers it.
  4. Public charging for weekly top-ups, the most expensive route.

The right answer depends on your council, your street layout and your mileage. Work through the sections in order; the first option that fits is usually the cheapest.

Can you run a charging cable across the pavement?

No, and do not let a neighbour’s dangling cable convince you otherwise. Councils treat cables across the pavement as an obstruction and a trip hazard, they breach electrical safety standards, and if someone trips over yours, your public liability position is grim. Hertfordshire County Council’s guidance is typical: cables across public pavements are not permitted, full stop.3

Cable covers and ramps sit in the same grey area and most councils reject them too. The legal version of the same idea is the cross-pavement channel, below.

What are cross-pavement charging channels?

A cross-pavement channel (also called a cable gully) is a narrow recessed tray cut into the pavement between your home and the kerb. Your cable sits inside it, flush with the surface, behind a hinged cover. You plug in on your property, drop the cable into the gully, and the pavement stays trip-free.

The important part is permission. The pavement belongs to the council, so the gully needs a licence from your local highways authority, and policies vary widely. A growing number of councils now run formal schemes; Hertfordshire, for example, agreed in principle to permit channels in February 2025.3 Products such as Kerbo Charge exist precisely for this market, typically costing a few hundred pounds plus installation.

Two things changed the game in 2026. From 1 April, the government extended the EV chargepoint grant to households with on-street parking: 75% of the cost, up to £500, claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer.1 And in April 2026 the government confirmed plans to introduce permitted development rights for cross-pavement solutions, which should end the current council-by-council lottery.5 Check both your council’s policy and the official grant guidance before you spend anything.

Can you get a kerbside or lamppost charger near you?

Probably the most underused move in this whole guide: ask. Most on-street chargers are installed where residents request them, and councils are sitting on Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) funding earmarked for exactly this. The UK’s public network passed 119,080 chargers at more than 46,000 locations by the end of March 2026, and on-street provision is the fastest-growing slice of it.4

Lamppost chargers deserve a special mention. Networks such as Shell Recharge Ubitricity, the largest UK network by charger count, convert ordinary streetlights into slow chargers.6 They charge at about 5kW, which sounds modest until you remember the car sits there for ten hours overnight. Overnight kerbside charging is the closest a street parker gets to the driveway experience.

The catch is price and etiquette. Kerbside rates are typically two to three times the home off-peak rate, and nobody wants to be the neighbour who camps on the street’s only charger for three days. Check your street on Zapmap’s live map before assuming you are stranded.4

How do you ask your council for a kerbside charger?

The process is more ordinary than people assume:

  1. Check your street and the surrounding ones on Zapmap first; if a charger already exists two streets away, your request lands differently.4
  2. Find the EV or highways page on your council’s website. Most now have an on-street charging request form or a dedicated email.
  3. Make the case plainly: you have no off-street parking, you own or are ordering an EV, and you are asking about their LEVI-funded plans for your area.
  4. Rally the neighbours. A street with three requesting households moves faster than a street with one, and councils plan in batches.

Response times vary from weeks to, frankly, ages. The Local EV Infrastructure fund has 21 live tenders funding exactly these installations through councils, so the money exists; the queue is the constraint.6

Can you charge at work instead?

For many commuters, yes, and it can be the cheapest option of all. The Workplace Charging Scheme gives employers up to £500 per socket, across as many as 40 sockets, towards installing chargepoints.1 Employers with chargers often offer charging free or at a nominal rate as a perk.

The maths works because eight hours at a desk is plenty for a 7kW top-up: even two charging days a week covers a typical 8,000-mile year. How do the options compare on cost?

Exact kerbside and rapid prices vary by network and change often, so check Zapmap’s live price filters rather than any fixed table, including ours.4 The shape of the market in mid-2026 is stable enough to rank, though:

  • Home via cross-pavement channel: the cheapest street-parking option once installed, because you are on your own domestic tariff, including off-peak rates around 8p/kWh, roughly 2.3p per mile.
  • Workplace charging: often free or nominal, which is impossible to beat.
  • Kerbside and lamppost AC: typically two to three times the home off-peak rate; still comfortably cheaper than petrol at 16.5p per mile.
  • Public rapid: priced as a convenience product, several times the home rate. Fine for occasional use, punishing as a routine.

The cross-pavement channel’s running costs are what make it the prize: after the one-off installation (softened by the £500 grant), a street parker charges at exactly the same rates as a driveway owner.

Can you rent a driveway with a charger?

A quieter option that suits some people: driveway marketplaces such as JustPark and YourParkingSpace let homeowners rent out their drives, and a growing number of listings include a chargepoint. If a neighbour two doors down has a wallbox and a spare space, renting it a few nights a week can replicate home charging without any works at your own property. Availability is postcode lottery at its purest, but checking takes five minutes and costs nothing.

What about public charging for everything?

The honest answer: it works, but it costs. Relying entirely on public chargers means paying several times the home rate on every kWh, plus the time cost of sitting with the car or walking home from the charger. For a low-mileage driver doing 4,000 miles a year, that premium is a few hundred pounds annually and entirely liveable. For a 12,000-mile driver, public-only charging can erase most of the EV’s fuel saving over petrol.

What should you do this month?

A practical order of operations for a street parker considering an EV:

  1. Check Zapmap for existing chargers within a ten-minute walk. If one exists and is priced sanely, you may already have your answer.4
  2. Check your council’s policy on cross-pavement channels. If they permit them, the £500 grant plus a wallbox is the best outcome available.2
  3. Ask your employer about workplace charging, pointing them at the £500-per-socket Workplace Charging Scheme.1
  4. Submit an on-street charging request to your council regardless; even a slow yes is a yes.

Is an EV still worth it without a driveway?

Usually yes, if at least one of the first three routes fits. A cross-pavement channel with the £500 grant gets you genuine home charging at driveway prices. A lamppost charger on your street gets you close, at maybe double the off-peak home rate but still well under petrol. Workplace charging can beat both.

The drivers who should hesitate are those with high mileage, no workplace charging and no council scheme: for them, public-only charging is the weakest version of EV ownership. Even then, the gap is narrowing.
