Tethered or untethered?
Tethered means the cable is permanently attached: open the app, grab the plug, done. Untethered means a socket on the unit and a separate cable you keep in the boot or the hall cupboard.

Untethered earns its keep in two cases: you care about a clean wall with nothing hanging on it, or your household mixes connector types and needs both Type 1 and Type 2 cables. What does “smart” actually mean?
Since 30 June 2022, every private chargepoint sold in Great Britain must comply with the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021.4 In practice that means your charger must:
- Default to charging outside peak grid hours (08:00 to 11:00 and 16:00 to 22:00 on weekdays), though you can always override it.
- Apply a randomised delay of up to 10 minutes at the start of a session, so thousands of chargers do not slam the grid at the same second.
- Keep charging if the Wi-Fi drops, meet cyber-security standards, and work with any supplier.
So “smart” is the legal baseline, not a premium feature. The meaningful software differences are above that floor: tariff APIs, solar diversion, load balancing for homes with small main fuses, and whether the app is a pleasure or a punishment. This is also why importing a grey-market charger is a false economy: a unit that cannot prove compliance will not be installed by a reputable electrician, and should not be.
Which features actually matter?
Marketing lists are long; the shortlist is short.
Load balancing. The charger watches your home’s total draw and throttles itself when the shower and the oven are on, protecting a small main fuse. On older 60A supplies this is the difference between fitting a charger and paying for a supply upgrade.
PEN fault protection. Built-in protection against a broken supply neutral, which removes the need for an earth rod. Most current units include it; check before buying an older design.1
Cable length and management. Five metres is standard. If your parking spot is awkward, measure the run from wall to charge port before choosing; a 7.5m tethered option or an untethered unit with a long cable solves what an extension never can.
Warranty and support. Three years is the norm. Because chargers live outside in British weather, the quality of the manufacturer’s support line matters more than most spec sheets.

Should you take the dealer’s charger bundle?
Dealers increasingly bundle a chargepoint with a new EV, sometimes discounted, sometimes nominally free. Judge the bundle on the hardware, not the headline: check which unit you are actually getting, whether the installation price assumes a standard job, and what happens to the price when the survey finds a long cable run. A free charger you would not have chosen, fitted at an inflated install price, is not free. If the bundled unit happens to be one of the picks above at a genuinely keen fitted price, take it without guilt.
