Tethered vs untethered EV charger: which should you buy?

The cable question looks trivial until you live with it twice a day for five years.

What is the actual difference?

A tethered charger has its cable permanently wired in: you open the app, take the plug off the holster and connect it to the car. An untethered charger is a box with a socket; you fetch your own cable and plug it into both the unit and the car. Both deliver the same 7kW; the difference is entirely about living with the thing.

The case for tethered

Convenience compounds. Twice a day, every day, for years: grab the plug, plug in, hang it back up. No boot rummaging, no wet cable coiled at your feet, no forgetting the cable at your in-laws’ house. Most tethered units ship with a 5 metre cable, and most are Type 2, which fits nearly every EV sold in the UK since 2018.3

The arithmetic helps too. Untethered units are a little cheaper, but a decent replacement Type 2 cable costs £100 to £200, which cancels the saving unless you already own a good cable.1

The case for untethered

Two situations genuinely favour it. First, mixed-connector households: an early Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses the old Type 1 connector, and an untethered unit lets you keep both cables and serve both cars. Second, aesthetics: some people want a small blank box on the wall with nothing hanging from it, and units like the Ohme ePod and Easee One are designed for exactly that look.2

Untethered also has a quiet longevity argument: cables are the part most likely to wear out or get run over, and on an untethered unit replacing one is a £150 annoyance rather than an engineer visit.

Security and trip hazards

While charging, the cable locks into the car, and most chargers lock their end too, so mid-charge theft is rare. The riskier moment is a cable left plugged into an untethered unit overnight with nothing on the other end. Tethered units stow the cable on the unit itself, which keeps it off the ground and out of the trip-hazard business altogether.

What cable length should you choose?

Five metres is the default and covers most driveways where the car parks nose-in beside the house. Measure before you buy: the run from the unit, around the car’s rear, to a charge port on the far side can easily exceed 5m on a wide car or an awkward angle. Tethered units with longer cables exist, and untethered setups can take a 10m cable, but remember that a longer cable is also a heavier, wetter thing to coil every night. The right length is the shortest one that reaches with slack to spare, not the longest available.

Are tethered cables replaceable?

Yes, but it is an engineer job rather than a plug swap, because the cable is hard-wired into the unit. Expect a call-out plus parts if a cable is damaged, typically more than the cost of a loose replacement cable. This is the untethered camp’s strongest practical card: when (not if) a cable gets run over by a wheel or chewed by a fox, the untethered owner buys a £150 cable online, and the tethered owner books a visit. Worth knowing in advance rather than discovering at 11pm on a wet Tuesday.

Do looks matter?

They are allowed to. An untethered unit with no cable hanging from it is the neater object on the wall, and if the charger mounts beside your front door, that matters to some households and not at all to others. Premium units hide even the tethered cable inside the casing, at a price. Decide with your eyes open: the cable will hang there for a decade, through every season, and the neighbours will survive either way.

What about households with two EVs?

Two-car households face the question twice. Two tethered units give the tidiest daily routine but double the hardware. One untethered unit plus two cables lets you share, as long as only one car needs the charger each night or you alternate. A middle path many settle on: one tethered unit for the car that charges most often, plus the granny cable or a second untethered point for the other. Whichever way you go, ask the installer about load management so both chargers share your supply politely rather than tripping the main fuse together.

So which should you buy?

Buy tethered if your household runs one Type 2 EV and you value the two-second plug-in ritual, which is most people. Buy untethered if you need Type 1 compatibility, you already own a good cable, or the clean wall matters to you.
