How much does it cost to install a home EV charger?
Budget around a thousand pounds for the box on the wall and the half day of electrical work, unless a grant or a tricky consumer unit changes the sum.
A typical home EV charger installation in the UK costs £800 to £1,200 supply and fit as of July 2026, covering a 7kW smart chargepoint, standard cabling and half a day of an electrician's time. Eligible renters, flat owners and households with on-street parking can claim the £500 government grant, bringing the net cost to about £450 to £850.
What is the average cost of installing a home EV charger?
As of July 2026, a standard UK installation costs £800 to £1,200 supply and fit.3 That buys a 7kW smart chargepoint, a cable run of up to about 10 metres from your consumer unit, the electrical protection devices, commissioning, an app setup and the installer walking you through it. Most quotes from national installer networks and local electricians land inside that band for a straightforward job on a house with a driveway.
“Standard” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The national averages assume your consumer unit has spare capacity, the wall you want the charger on is near it, and the cable route is short and simple. Every deviation from that picture costs money, and the sections below price the common ones.
What does a standard installation include?
A proper fixed-price installation normally covers:
- The chargepoint itself, a 7kW smart unit compliant with the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021.4
- A new dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, with an RCBO or equivalent protection.
- Up to about 10 metres of cable, clipped to walls or run through conduit.
- Drilling, mounting and sealing the unit, usually at chest height on an outside wall.
- Commissioning, Wi-Fi or 4G setup, and a demonstration of scheduling.
- The electrical certificate for the work.
Reputable installers survey first, usually from photos you send of your consumer unit, your meter and the proposed charger location. The survey is where surprises get caught, so treat any quote given without one as provisional.
What pushes the installation price up?
Consumer unit upgrades. Older fuse boxes may lack space or the right protection for a 32A circuit. A replacement or a supplementary unit typically adds £200 to £500 depending on the state of the existing board.
Long cable runs. Beyond the included metres, cable and labour add up at roughly £15 to £30 per metre once digging or lifting floors is involved. A charger at the far end of a long drive can add several hundred pounds.
Groundworks. Burying cable under a lawn or driveway means a trench, ducting and reinstatement. This is the item most likely to turn an £900 quote into a £1,400 one.
Main fuse and supply upgrades. Some older homes have a 60A main fuse that an installer may judge too small once a 7kW charger is added. Upgrading it is free in many regions but involves your distribution network operator and a wait of weeks. Modern chargers get round many of these cases with load curtailment, throttling charge when the house is drawing heavily.
Earthing. Many current chargers include PEN fault protection, which removes the need for an earth rod. Where a rod is required, it is a modest extra rather than a deal-breaker.3
How much do the chargers themselves cost?
Within an installed quote, the hardware is typically £400 to £700 of the total. Two hardware decisions affect the price you pay. Tethered units with a fixed cable cost a little more than untethered ones but save you buying a separate cable later. And solar-aware units that can follow your panels’ output, led by the myenergi Zappi, carry a premium that only pays back if you actually have solar.
Can the £500 grant cut the cost?
Yes, if you are in one of the eligible groups. From 1 April 2026 the government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, for renters, flat owner-occupiers, residential landlords and households with on-street parking.1 The scheme runs to 31 March 2027 and the grant is claimed by your OZEV-authorised installer as a discount on the invoice, so you never handle the paperwork yourself.2
That takes the net cost of a typical job to about £450 to £850.3 The group that misses out is homeowners in houses with private driveways: their grant ended in 2022. Where should the charger go?
The best spot balances four things. Proximity to the consumer unit keeps the cable run, and the bill, short. Proximity to where the car’s charge port sits matters more than people expect: charge ports live on different corners of different cars, so picture your actual car in its actual parking spot before committing. Wi-Fi signal matters because smart chargers need a connection for scheduling and tariff integration; if the wall is a dead zone, ask about units with 4G fallback or plan a mesh node. And think about the cable’s path as a trip hazard: a lead stretched across a garden path at midnight is a design flaw you installed yourself.
Height is regulated by common sense more than by law: chest height on a solid wall, sheltered where possible, and reachable without standing in a flower bed.
What happens on installation day?
A standard job runs to a predictable script, and most take about half a day:3
- The electrician confirms the plan from the survey and isolates the power.
- A new dedicated circuit is run from the consumer unit, with its own protective device.
- The chargepoint is mounted, wired and sealed.
- The circuit is tested and certified.
- The unit is connected to your Wi-Fi, paired with its app, and a schedule is set.

Your power will be off for part of the morning, so finish the coffee first.
How do you choose an installer?
Three filters do most of the work. First, OZEV authorisation: it is mandatory if you are using the grant and a sensible quality bar even if you are not.2 Second, a genuinely fixed quote based on a photo survey of your consumer unit, meter and charger location, not a from-price that grows on the day. Third, evidence they handle the paperwork: the Building Regulations notification for the new circuit, and the DNO notification that chargepoint installers must file. Manufacturer-installer bundles (buying the unit and the fitting from one company) are convenient and keenly priced; a good local electrician with chargepoint experience is often cheaper on non-standard jobs. Get two quotes either way, and check that each names the exact chargepoint model, the cable length included, and every exclusion in writing.
Can renters and flat owners get a charger installed?
Yes, with two extra steps. You need the landlord’s or freeholder’s written consent, ideally covering the unit, the cable route and what happens at the end of the tenancy. How long does installation take?
A standard job takes about half a day. The electrician fits the circuit, mounts and wires the unit, tests it, connects it to your Wi-Fi and shows you the app. Add a consumer unit upgrade and it becomes most of a day. Add groundworks or a main fuse upgrade from your network operator and the calendar, rather than the clock, becomes the constraint: those jobs can stretch over weeks even though the actual work is short.
Book the installation for after your car is ordered but before it arrives. Lead times for installers run from a few days to a few weeks, and charging your brand new EV from a three-pin socket for its first fortnight is a ritual nobody enjoys twice.
Do you need planning permission or a DIY installer?
Planning first: in England, most home chargepoints have been permitted development since the rules were broadened on 29 May 2025, so no planning application is needed for a typical house with off-street parking.5 Listed buildings, flats and some conservation areas still need consent, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own rules. DIY second, and firmly: a fixed 7kW chargepoint is notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations. It must be installed and certified by a registered competent electrician, and every grant scheme requires an OZEV-authorised installer anyway.2 This is one of the rare jobs where doing it yourself is both unsafe and more expensive in the long run.
